Celebrating Autism
World Autism Awareness Week - WAAW
Monday 27th to Friday 31st March 2017
The Academy joined the nation and indeed the world in encouraging and promoting autism awareness. They took time throughout the week in class to discuss Autism and Me, producing displays and posters focusing on 'Celebrating Us', and highlighting their special interests and talents.
Jessica in Red Room displayed some of her intricate handmade plasticine models, and other students discussed their interests as part of an autism awareness video produced.

During the week each classroom held a party to celebrate WAAW. Students enjoyed hot chocolate with marshmallows and milk, as well as time to relax and socialise with their friends.
To round off the week all students took to non-uniform on Friday, donning pink and purple, onesies, or special outfits. The Academy joined with Merchants' Academy Primary, who all wore blue in support of autism, and they all had a special celebration assembly.
The assembly discussed 'What is Autism', and gave students a chance to share their particular interests and talents to everyone. A special well done to Lakhile who played a freestyle piano piece infront of all the students, he was very brave, and is becoming very relaxed with an audience watching.
At lunch time on Friday, a group of students from Merchants' Academy Primary joined with football fanatics from Venturers' to share their interest. They played a friendly football match with mixed up teams, and everyone enjoyed getting to know eachother and building new friendships.
"The World Autism Awareness Week has been a great success. The week has been all about celebrating our unique qualities – you are all unique, you are all valued, you are all brilliant."
